Terodde goal wins it in Paderborn
FC Schalke 04 recorded an away win on Sunday afternoon (12/9). The Royal Blues beat SC Paderborn 07 1-0 at the Benteler-Arena thanks to a Simon Terodde goal after some great work by Marius Bülter.
Flick replaces Drexler
Dominick Drexler missed out on the trip to Paderborn due to a minor knee injury. His place in the team was taken by Florian Flick in the only change from the 3-1 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf last time out in the league.
Goalless first 45
Both teams got stuck in early on, although the majority of the opening stages saw the game played in the middle of the park. The first big chance of the game came in the 11th minute for the hosts. Dennis Srbeny played Sven Michel in behind, however his left-footed strike past Ralf Fährmann trickled past the far post.
Marius Bülter had Schalke’s first opportunity. The striker took a shot on the turn after an Ouwejan corner, which Paderborn keeper Jannik Huth was equal to (21’). This was S04’s best moment in the first half, in which the home team enjoyed more of the ball.
With two minutes to go in the first period, the Royal Blues had Ralf Fährmann to thank. He beat away a powerful shot from Marco Schuster to keep the scores level (43’).
Bülter assists Terodde
Schalke were better in the second half and had the first shot through Thomas Ouwejan. His powerful effort on his strong left foot was punched away by Huth (55’).
Two good chances then followed for Grammozis’ side. Firstly, Simon Terodde headed towards goal, albeit without enough power and it was easy for Huth to hold (57’). Less than a minute later, Darko Churlinov met a floated cross at the back post, unluckily flicking it just past the post.
Schalke’s improvement was rewarded after 63 minutes when Terodde opened the scoring. Marius Bülter burst his way though, managed to keep the ball in before playing it back to his strike partner, who calmly slotted it through Huth’s legs and into the back of the net. Five minutes later, Rodrigo Zalazar’s dangerous cross-cum-shot then needed saving by Huth.
With the clock running down, Terodde had a great chance to double S04’s lead. He was clean through against Huth, however his shot was saved, although it probably would have been ruled out for offside anyway (76’). The three points were secured thanks to Fährmann’s big save in the 84th minute. He expertly kept out a low Kai Pröger drive from inside the box. The final chance was for Terodde, which was a shot that was too central and didn’t threaten (87’), therefore it ended 1-0.
