Schalke beaten 4-1 in Regensburg
FC Schalke 04 lost 4-1 away to SSV Jahn Regensburg, who continue to lead the way at the top of the second division.
Two changes to the team – New signings on the bench
Head coach Dimitrios Grammozis made two changes to the side that started the 1-1 draw against Erzgebirge Aue last weekend. Florian Flick and Reinhold Ranftl came into the starting XI in place of Mehmet Can Aydin and Yaroslav Mikhailov. This week’s new arrivals, Ko Itakura and Darko Churlinov took their place on the bench alongside Matthew Hoppe, who has recovered from his stomach infection.
Beste puts Jahn Regensburg in front
The Royal Blues enjoyed a slight majority in possession during the opening stages and had the first chance of the game. Marcin Kaminski used the space available to carry the ball forward into the midfield, found Thomas Ouwejan in the penalty area who set up Dominick Drexler for the first-time shot, which was blocked by Benedikt Gimber (3’).
Five minutes later, the ball was in the back of the net at the other end. Shortly after a good save from Ralf Fährmann to deny Andreas Albers, Regensburg won the ball back high up the pitch through David Otto. The striker slid the ball across to Jan-Niklas Beste who beat Fährmann from 20 yards with his preferred left-foot.
The Knappen failed to create any clear goalscoring opportunities after falling behind, coming closest to an equaliser through Thomas Ouwejan in the 15th minute, who just missed the ball after a cross from Reinhold Ranftl. Florian Flick became the first to deny Regensburg a second goal at the other end as he blocked a dangerous effort from Andreas Albers (17’).
Fährmann denies Otto - No penalty for Ranftl incident

Debuts for Itakura and Churlinov
Ko Itakura was brought on for his Schalke debut at the start of the second half. The Japan international replaced Florian Flick and was joined on the debutant list by Darko Chrulinov in the 62nd minute with Reinhold Ranflt making way.
The Knappen started the second half well and created three chances to equalise in the first seven minutes after the restart: Drexler’s shot from 16 yards was saved by Meyer (48’), Simon Terodde’s header from an Ouwejan cross missed the goal narrowly (50’), and Rodrigo Zalazar’s free kick from 20 yards was blocked by the Regensburg wall (52’).
The second goal of the game fell to the hosts, however, as a free-kick routine found its way to Steve Breitkreuz, who swung the ball past Fährmann with a sneaky finish through a crowd of players. 2-0 to Regensburg (55’).
Terodde reduces deficit – Singh adds another
With Schalke struggling to mount a comeback, it was Regensburg who added another in the 73rd minute. Beste swung his corner from the right into the near post with his left foot, David Otto got his head to it and beat Fährmann at the first post to make it 3-0.
With ten minutes to go, Marcin Kaminski’s chipped ball into the box was knocked on by Darko Chrulinov into the path of Terodde, who beat Meyer from close range. Five minutes later, Sarpeet Singh restored Regensburg’s three goal lead with a firm finish from five yards. 4-1 to Jahn Regensburg the full-time score.
