Vindheim makes his debut

Head coach Dimitrios Grammozis made two changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Holstein Kiel last Sunday. Andreas Vindheim and Marvin Pieringer (suspended last time out) replaced Reinhold Ranftl and Darko Churlinov in the starting XI. This was Vindheim’s debut for the club.

Terodde twice denied by Männel

In front of 1,000 fans at the Erzgebirgsstadion, Schalke took control of proceedings right away, but lacked precision in the final third early on. The first chance came for Ko Itakura, the defender heading Thomas Ouwejan’s corner wide in the fifth minute. The hosts’ first effort was by Nicolas Kühn, his strike going well over (11’), before Martin Fraisl had to be alert to keep out Prince Owusu’s stab at goal from close range (14’).

04 minutes later, Marvin Pieringer flicked on a deflected Ouwejan cross towards Terodde. Aue goalkeeper Martin Männel was just about quicker to the ball than Terodde to deny him a clear chance. Männel then again kept Terodde at bay, this time saving Terodde’s left-footed shot with his legs (24’).

Quick double thanks to Terodde and Vindheim

Schalke’s top goalscorer wouldn’t be denied for much longer. With 36 minutes played, Andreas Vindheim put a low cross into the box. That wasn’t properly cleared by defender Malcolm Cacutalua and the ball landed at Terodde’s feet, who, of course, buried the chance. The lead was quickly doubled by Grammozis’ men – two minutes later, Marvin Pieringer headed it to Terodde high up the pitch, and he then played a beautiful through ball to the debutant Vindheim. He was clean through and struck it over Männel for his first goal in Schalke colours (38’).

Vindheim then showed his capabilities at the other end, blocking a dangerous shot from Ben Zolinski (43’). It looked as if Schalke would have a great chance to make it three just before half time after referee Dr. Arne Aarnink pointed the spot. He had blown up because of a supposed handball against Malcolm Cacutalua, however VAR intervened, and once he checked back the footage, Aarnink reversed his decision.

Latza comes on and scores twice

Danny Latza replaced Rodrigo Zalazar for the second half and he quickly made his mark on the game. Marvin Pieringer pinged in a cross which Latza met on the volley to make it 3-0 (50’). Shortly before that, Blendi Idrizi had a shot well saved by Männel. The Kosovo international also hit one over the crossbar with an hour played.

Latza effectively killed the game off with his second goal in the 63rd minute. Vindheim found space down the right, whipped a cross in and Latza headed it into the far corner for his second.

Pieringer with the final goal

The impressive Marvin Pieringer was involved in two chances in quick succession. Firstly, he slipped substitute Marius Bülter in behind, who hammered it at Männel (70’). The tall striker then got a goal for himself, slotting home on his left after Cacutalua failed to properly clear another Vindheim delivery (72’). Despite Schalke remaining comfortable until the end, Aue did have one good chance. Dimitrij Nazarov met a Trujic cross on the volley, but couldn’t keep it down (83’), meaning it ended 5-0 to the Royal Blues.

At home against Regensburg after the international break

S04’s next game is in two weeks due to the upcoming international break. SSV Jahn Regensburg will visit Gelsenkirchen on Saturday (5/2) at 13:30 CET.
