Marvin Pieringer: We took advantage of the space and got our goals

Head coach Dimitrios Grammozis and his opposite number Marc Hensel spoke to the media after Schalke’s 5-0 win over FC Erzgebirge Aue on Saturday evening (22/1). Striker Marvin Pieringer also gave his opinion on the game.

FC Erzgebirge Aue - FC Schalke 04

Dimitrios Grammozis:

We’re really pleased to be leaving Aue with the three points. Aue were really compact for large parts of the first half and it was hard to find gaps. The first goal played into our hands and the second one then gave us more confidence. Our third then paved the way for victory. 5-0 is a clear result, but we had to work really hard for this win. We’re delighted to have secured this result before the international break. I’d like to praise my lads for dealing with the difficult conditions well and putting in a great performance. You can always be pleased with a clean sheet. I’m happy with the three points and I would like to wish Erzgebirge Aue all the best for the rest of the season.

Marc Hensel:

This defeat hurts; we wanted our first home win in a few months today. We lost our grip on the game and some confidence after the individual mistakes – we have to be more solid. We made the wrong decision each time for their goals. Lots of things are going wrong right now in decisive moments for us. If you can’t score from five yards out like us, you won’t be successful against Schalke.

Marvin Pieringer:

We played well for the whole game and barely let Aue get going. They let us play a bit, we took advantage of the space and got our goals. I wanted to pay back the coach for the trust he placed in me – I think I did that. Scoring a goal was extremely important to me, after all that’s what you want to do as a striker. Our style of play requires us to have good movement and to create space for our teammates, even if we don’t get the ball ourselves. My partnership with Simon worked well today. A 5-0 win is a good way to head into the international break.
