Dimitrios Grammozis: We weren't sharp or quick enough
After Schalke’s 4-1 defeat to SSV Jahn Regensburg on Saturday, 21 August, both head coaches as well as Dominick Drexler and Simon Terodde gave their post-match thoughts.
Dimitrios Grammozis:
We had high expectations of ourselves for this game and we wanted to take a step in the right direction. We knew we were coming up against a team full of confidence and things got off to a bad start with their first goal, which we were fully to blame for. We made the wrong decision in this instance – we had the ball and tried to play it forward, but we lacked sharpness and urgency. We weren’t good enough, and conceding three goals from set-pieces makes it a really negative day on the whole. The fact that we made it a miserable day for our fans is what hurts the most. We need to try and be a team, not just in the dressing room, but out on the pitch too. We are working hard to achieve this every day. We cannot allow ourselves to play like we did today, however, losing by such a high margin.
Mersad Selimbegovic:
We didn’t start well, showed them too much respect. After ten minutes we put that behind us. At the moment, a lot of our shots from distance are finding the back of the net, which obviously helps our cause. We didn’t start the second half well either, but managed to get our second at the right time and started to play with more freedom after that.
Dominick Drexler:
Everyone who played today will be asking questions of themselves and trying to turn things around with a really good game next week in our arena. We played really badly today and everyone has to look at how they can improve, so that we can perform better as a team. We need to try and chalk this result off as quickly as possible.
Simon Terodde:
It was a bad game. We have to be critical and say that our first-half display was not good enough. In the second half we managed to create one or two chances – the set-pieces were the deciding factor in the end. The fans, whether they were in the stands or watching on the TV, are disappointed, and rightly so. We are too.
