Dimitrios Grammozis: It shows how the team plays for one other
It was a successful Sunday for FC Schalke 04. The Royal Blues defeated FC Ingolstadt 3-0, and Simon Terodde equalled Dieter Schatzschneider’s all-time 2. Bundesliga goalscoring record with his 153rd goal. Both coaches spoke to the media after the game, as well as goalscorer Mehmet Can Aydin.
Dimitrios Grammozis:
This is a special moment, not just for Simon and FC Schalke 04, but also for the whole of football. Someone managing to score so many goals is some achievement. I’m just so pleased for Simon. Dominick Drexler could have shot himself in that situation – but that just shows how the team plays for one another.
It was a difficult game, as we expected. Ingolstadt were solid at the back and made it hard for us to find any space. Whenever we looked to get high up the pitch at the right moments, we had opportunities to create chances. However, we were lacking a bit of cutting edge in the final third. On the other hand, we were compact at the back and didn’t allow them many chances. I wanted us to look for a second goal more after the first – I told the lads that at half time. The first 15 minutes of the second half were somewhat disjointed. The second goal swung the game in our favour again and the third was the icing on the cake. I’m really happy for the lads and I’m delighted we can go into the international break on the back of three points.
André Schubert:
Congratulations to Schalke for the win and to Simon Terodde for equalling the record. It’s important that we get more and more stability in our game, and we managed that for large parts of today’s match. We defended really well in the first half and didn’t allow them many chances. We had a few bright moments on the break, however we were lacking some confidence and courage on occasions going forward. We will look to get those back for next week. For the most part, we did what we had set out to do today. I’m confident that we’ll get back on track. This will be a long journey, and we’ll probably have to fight for survival right until the final matchday.
Mehmet Can Aydin:
I haven’t yet got my head around what happened today. I’ll probably only be able to comprehend it when I watch the goal back tonight. I can’t describe how happy I am. I saw this kick in Karate Kid and thought I’d try it in a game – and it worked! Ingolstadt did really well in the first half, and we had problems. We were better after the break, pressed them and scored three nice goals. We were expecting Simon to score today considering he does in almost every game. I’m really pleased for him, he’s a great striker. I’ve never seen anyone as clinical as him. He deserves this record.
