Dimitrios Grammozis: Every player contributed to this victory

Following Schalke’s 2-1 win over SSV Jahn Regensburg on Saturday (5/2), both head coaches spoke about the game. Victor Pálsson also gave his opinion on the victory.

Dimitrios Grammozis

Dimitrios Grammozis:

It was a tough game as we expected. We were doing well for the first 10-15 minutes and had two or three chances to take the lead. The rest of the first half was too chaotic and we lost the ball too many times. We spoke about a few things during half time and it became clear to us that we would have to force chances even if we weren’t playing our best football. We got two goals with help of the lads that came off the bench, but also thanks to the fans who drove us on. We wanted more attacking power with our substitutions. Marius Bülter was really important today, he assisted both goals. Darko Churlinov played his part by winning the free-kick for the second goal too. It’s nice that all the subs helped contribute to the win. I would like to apologise to Darko. I know how disappointing it can be to be taken off after coming on yourself. I had to think of the team in this situation. He reacted really positively and celebrated the win with the rest of the lads. He said I can have a think about how to make it up to him. We’ll see what it ends up being.

Mersad Selimbegovic:

We did a lot of things well today. You could see that both sides enjoyed playing in front of fans again. We took the lead and had a good period in the second half, plus we withstood their pressure and even had the chance to go 2-0 up. It was tough for us once they equalised, and they then took the lead from a set piece, which ultimately saw us leave empty handed.

Victor Pálsson:

You know what to expect when you play Regensburg. I’ve taken them on many times and it’s always a real fight. We played with more power in the second half, won our tackles and were therefore able to win this game. Everybody in our team is important and it’s great having real competition for places. It was great that the lads that came on were able to win the game for us. Darko reacted really well to being taken off, and the fans were fantastic too.
